15232

Case IH 15232 – CCM or TCU: Steering wheel sensor communication data error

Issue description

The CAN bus communication network has detected corrupted, invalid, or interrupted data flowing between the steering wheel position sensor (SASA), the electronic steering valve, and the control unit.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 115U
  • Steiger 620
  • Magnum
  • Patriot 3230
  • Patriot 3330
  • Patriot 4420
  • Patriot 4430
  • Patriot 4440
  • Axial-Flow 7250
  • Axial-Flow 8250
  • Axial-Flow 9250

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes (15233, 15234, or 15235) which indicate a hard wiring failure or completely dead sensor rather than just a data error.

  2. Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the steering wheel position sensor, the electronic steering valve, and the CCM/TCU for chafing, shorts to ground, or broken wires.

  3. Examine the steering wheel position sensor connector (C638) for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  4. Verify the sensor is receiving its required 5-volt reference and ground from the control module.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical shorts and CAN bus voltage spikes.

  2. Access the Sensor

Remove the steering column shrouds/covers. The Steering Angle Sensor Absolute (SASA) is installed compactly between the steering column and the steering unit.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector (C638) from the sensor. Unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket on the steering column.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Mount the new sensor. Note: Ensure the steering wheel and the wheels are perfectly straight during installation, as the sensor detects absolute position.

  5. Reassemble and Reconnect

Reinstall the steering column covers and reconnect the battery.

  6. Recalibrate

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Clear the inactive 15232 fault code and perform the steering angle sensor calibration procedure to teach the CCM the new 'center' position.
