Case IH 15234 – Steering Valve Controller / Auto-Guidance Controller: Steering wheel sensor offline

The control system has lost communication with the steering wheel sensor (or steering angle sensor). The sensor is no longer broadcasting its position or velocity data over the machine's CAN bus network, which immediately disables auto-guidance and auto-steer functionalities.

   Inspect the wiring harness connecting the steering wheel sensor to the main harness for chafing, breaks, or rodent damage, particularly near the steering column or front steering axle.

   Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins that could cause a loss of communication.

   Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (typically 5V) and has a solid ground connection.

   Check the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines for proper voltage and resistance (typically 60 ohms across the network).

   Verify if your specific machine uses an external column/axle-mounted sensor or an internal cylinder sensor before ordering parts.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Sensor

   Remove any plastic shrouding around the steering column or locate the sensor on the front axle tie-rod/articulation joint.

   Disconnect

   Carefully unplug the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

   Remove

   Remove the mounting bolts or retaining clips securing the sensor in place.

   Install

   Mount the new OEM sensor in the exact same orientation. Secure the mounting hardware (do not overtighten, as these often have plastic housings).

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks into place.

   Reassemble & Power Up

   Reinstall any shrouding and reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Turn on the machine. You must use the in-cab display (e.g., Pro 600 / Pro 700) or a dealer diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 15234 fault code and perform a steering angle sensor calibration so the module learns the new sensor's center position.
