15235

Case IH 15235 – Steering Valve Controller / CCM: Steering wheel sensor invalid velocity or position value

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the steering wheel sensor (SASA) is transmitting erratic, implausible, or out-of-range data regarding the rotation speed or position of the steering wheel, causing the auto-steer system to disable itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • AFX8010
  • 7010
  • 7120
  • 7230
  • 8010
  • 8120
  • 8230
  • 9010
  • 9120
  • 9230
  • Maxxum
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Farmall

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN bus codes (15232, 15233, or 15234) which indicate a communication or wiring issue rather than a failed sensor

  2. Remove the steering column covers and inspect the wiring harness connecting to the steering wheel sensor for chafed wires, loose pins, or corrosion

  3. Verify the sensor is receiving a 9-32 VDC supply voltage and a solid ground at the connector

  4. Inspect the mechanical engagement of the sensor, ensuring the M6 mounting bolts have not vibrated loose and the splined ring is undamaged

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

Power down the machine, turn off the battery isolator switch, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Remove steering column covers

Remove the plastic shrouds/covers surrounding the steering column to expose the steering wheel sensor assembly.

  3. Disconnect electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness from the steering wheel sensor.

  4. Remove mounting hardware

Remove the mounting hardware. The sensor is typically held in place by M6 x 16 bolts and Belleville spring washers.

  5. Remove old sensor

Carefully slide the old sensor and its splined ring off the steering shaft.

  6. Install new sensor

Install the new steering wheel sensor and splined ring, ensuring the splines engage the steering shaft correctly so it tracks 360-degree rotation without binding.

  7. Reinstall mounting hardware

Reinstall the M6 mounting bolts and spring washers, tightening them to the specified torque.

  8. Reconnect harness and covers

Reconnect the electrical harness and reinstall the steering column covers.

  9. Reconnect battery

Reconnect the battery and power on the machine.

  10. Clear fault code and calibrate

Access the AFS Pro display or connect the electronic service tool (EST) to clear the stored 15235 fault code. You will likely need to perform a steering sensor calibration procedure in the display to establish the new zero-index point.
