15236

Case IH 15236 – CCM (Cab Control Module): Vehicle speed sensor message (from TCU) communication data error

Issue description

This is a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication fault. It indicates that the receiving control module is detecting corrupted, erratic, or invalid data packets regarding the vehicle's ground speed being broadcast by the Transmission Control Unit (TCU).

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Farmall series (40-45-50, 115U)
  • Optum (Final Tier 4)
  • Puma CVT
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Maxxum
  • Luxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Check for companion codes (such as 15237, 15238, and 15239) that might indicate a broader network failure.

  2. Test the CAN High and CAN Low lines between the TCU and the Cab Control Module for open circuits, shorts to ground, or high resistance.

  3. Inspect the physical wiring harness connecting the Vehicle Speed Sensor to the TCU for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins at the connectors.

  4. Remove and inspect the vehicle speed sensor on the transmission housing for metal shavings or debris on the magnetic pickup, which can cause erratic pulse frequency signaling.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible heavy-duty scanner (e.g., Bosch ESI[truck]) to the diagnostic port to verify active vs. stored status for code 15236.

  2. Isolate the Fault

If the diagnostic tool cannot communicate with the TCU at all, the issue is the TCU power/ground or the main CAN backbone. If communication is active but the speed data is erratic, the issue is isolated to the sensor or the sensor-to-TCU wiring.

  3. Repair Wiring

Repair any damaged CAN bus wiring or sensor pigtails found during the visual inspection.

  4. Replace Sensor

If the wiring tests good but the TCU is receiving erratic pulse frequencies, replace the transmission vehicle speed sensor.

  5. Calibrate and Clear

After replacing the sensor or repairing the CAN lines, clear the fault codes. Some CVT models may require a transmission/clutch calibration via the diagnostic tool after TCU-related repairs.

  6. Test Drive

Operate the tractor to ensure the TCU is successfully broadcasting the vehicle speed message to the CCM without logging the 15236 error.
