Case IH 15242 – Steering Valve Controller: Steering control message (from TCU) offline

A Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication failure indicating the steering valve controller (or auto-guidance system) has stopped receiving expected data messages from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU), or the TCU has dropped completely offline from the CAN network.

   Verify TCU status using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or D-TECH App to determine if the module is online or offline.

   Inspect internal CAN connections for short circuits, open circuits, or loose/corroded plug connections at the TCU and steering controller.

   Check that the TCU is receiving proper operating power and ground.

   Verify the 5-volt reference circuits on the bus for voltage spikes or drops that could crash the CAN network.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during harness inspection.

   Harness Inspection

   Trace the CAN bus wiring harness between the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) and the Steering Valve Controller. Look for pinch points, rubbed-through insulation, or areas where the harness may have shorted to the chassis.

   Connector Maintenance

   Disconnect the harness plugs at both the TCU and the steering controller. Inspect the pins for pushed-back terminals, bent pins, moisture intrusion, or green corrosion. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before securely reconnecting them.

   Wiring Repair

   If a short or break is found in the CAN lines (CAN HI or CAN LO), repair the wiring harness using OEM-approved splicing methods, or replace the affected harness section.

   Software/Module Reset

   Reconnect the battery. Connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool to the diagnostic port (Pin C for CAN 1 HI, Pin D for CAN 1 LO). Clear the inactive fault codes.

   Test

   Turn the key to the ON position and monitor the CAN network. If the TCU remains offline despite good wiring and power, the TCU itself may have failed internally and will require replacement and reprogramming.
