Case IH 15243 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC) / Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Steering control message (from TCU) invalid data value
Issue description
The system is receiving an invalid data message over the CAN bus because the software configuration in the steering controller incorrectly expects an auxiliary steering device to be present and active, or there is a mismatch in the configuration data being sent from the transmission controller.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Farmall 40, 45, and 50 Tractors
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Tractors (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Case IH Vestrum CVX Series Tractors
Check the cause
Verify if the tractor is physically equipped with an auxiliary steering device (such as a secondary steering valve or GPS auto-guidance steering add-on).
Use the diagnostic tool to verify the 'Auxiliary steering device' parameter in the Steering Valve Controller (likely enabled when it should be disabled).
Inspect the wiring harness and CAN bus connectors between the TCU and the Steering Valve Controller for corrosion, backed-out pins, or wire chafing.
Verify that the TCU and SVC are running compatible software versions (e.g., SVC software version 2.02).
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Turn ignition ON
Turn the ignition key to the ON position (engine off).
Access modules
Access the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and Transmission Control Unit (TCU) modules in the EST software.
Navigate to configuration
Navigate to the configuration/calibration menu for the steering system.
Locate parameter
Locate the configuration parameter for the Auxiliary Steering Device.
Change setting
Change the setting to match the physical build of the tractor (e.g., change from 'Enabled' to 'Disabled' if no auxiliary steering device is installed).
Save configuration
Save the configuration changes to the controller.
Perform key cycle
Perform a key cycle: Turn the ignition off, wait 30 seconds for the modules to power down completely, and turn the ignition back on.
Clear fault code
Clear the inactive fault code 15243 from the system memory.
Test drive
Test drive the tractor, utilizing the steering system at various speeds, to ensure the fault code does not return.
Re-flash software
If the code returns and the configuration is correct, the SVC or TCU may require a software re-flash to the latest version.
Parts you might need
(3)Steering Valve Controller (SVC) / Steering Redundant Controller (SRC)
51631896Must be programmed with the correct dataset (e.g., dataset version 3.2, part number 51573865) upon installation.
Transmission Control Unit (TCU)
Varies heavily by specific tractor model and transmission type.
CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Connectors
Varies by model. Replace if communication lines between the TCU and SVC are damaged.
