Case IH 15251 - AST – AST (Advanced Steering / Auto Steer): Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Fault Detection Algorithm (FDA) enabled
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the steering valve controller has detected an invalid, missing, or mismatched configuration parameter. Because the configuration is incorrect, the controller's internal safety mechanism—the Fault Detection Algorithm (FDA)—has been triggered to disable automated steering functions and prevent unintended or unsafe steering movements.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- AFS Connect Magnum Series (Models 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380)
- Optum Series (Tier 5 / Stage V)
- Maxxum Series (CVT)
- Puma Series
- Steiger Series
Check the cause
Access On-Board Diagnostics by navigating the 'H menus' using the switches on the instrument cluster. Go to the R1 module, menu H3, and select the AST system to view live status and verify if the code is active or stored.
Use an electronic service tool (such as Case IH EST or Jaltest) to read the ECU failure memory and check the current software version and configuration dataset of the Steering Valve Controller.
Check for recent service history to determine if the steering valve, steering angle sensor, or AST controller was recently replaced or updated without a post-installation calibration.
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect your diagnostic service tool to the tractor's diagnostic port.
Navigate to AST module
Navigate to the AST (Advanced Steering) module.
Perform steering calibration
Perform the Steering Calibration Procedure. (Note: Recent technical releases for the AST system specifically address steering calibration requirements for Maxxum CVT and Magnum models to resolve configuration errors).
Re-flash controller dataset
If calibration fails, the controller dataset is likely corrupted or incorrect for the installed valve type. Re-flash the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) with the correct Advanced Steering Configuration dataset for the specific tractor PIN/model.
Clear fault codes
Clear the fault codes.
Cycle key power
Cycle the key power to reboot the modules and verify that the Fault Detection Algorithm (FDA) has cleared and the new configuration is accepted.
Parts you might need
