Case IH 15251 – Steering Valve Controller: Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Fault Detection Algorithm enabled

Issue description

The steering valve controller has detected a configuration mismatch or an active fault detection algorithm has been triggered, often related to the auto-guidance (AFS AccuGuide) or the main steering safety controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 95U
  • Farmall 115U
  • Farmall 120U
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac
  • Patriot
  • Flagship Combines
  • Mid-Range Common Cab Combines

Check the cause

  1. Check for related codes that might pinpoint the issue, such as roading switch faults (15252–15254) or incorrect valve type configurations (15255–15257)

  2. Bleed the steering system by turning the steering wheel fully left and fully right a minimum of 10 times, listening for abnormal noise or vibration

  3. Verify hydraulic flow and pressure to ensure the steering valve is supplied with sufficient oil flow and the relief valve setting is correct (calibration requires pressure to be <80% of the relief valve setting)

  4. Check operating temperature to ensure the hydraulic oil is at normal operating temperature before attempting to calibrate the steering valve

Repair steps

  1. Access the Toolbox

On the cab display, navigate to TOOLBOX > NAV / NAV-S and ensure the Navigation is set correctly (e.g., AFS AccuGuide).

  2. Rear Wheel / Steering Sensor Calibration

Navigate to CALIBRATION > CALIBR. Drive the machine in a straight line in a wide-open area. Press OK to save the position. Measure the steering cylinder rod length—it must be within ¼" on both sides. Adjust if necessary.

  3. Steering Valve Calibration

In the same CALIBRATION menu, select the Steering Valve Calibration. Follow the on-screen prompts to cycle the valve. The controller will automatically learn the valve command required for steering movement.

  4. Module Replacement (If Calibration Fails)

If the steering valve or controller has failed mechanically or electronically and will not accept the configuration, the steering control valve assembly must be replaced and the above calibration procedure repeated.
