Case IH 15252 – Steering Valve Controller / Auto-Guidance Controller: Roading switch stuck closed

The roading switch (or master roading switch) is a safety toggle that disables auto-guidance and certain hydraulic/steering functions when the machine is traveling at high speeds on public roads. Fault code 15252 indicates that the controller is continuously receiving a "closed circuit" signal from this switch. Because the system believes the tractor is permanently in "Road Mode," it will lock out auto-guidance (AccuGuide/SmarTrax) and prevent field operations from engaging.

   Manually toggle the master roading switch back and forth between 'Field Mode' and 'Road Mode' to check if it is physically stuck or has debris in the contacts.

   Access the ISOBus diagnostic page on your AFS Pro 600, Pro 1200, or Viper 4+ display and monitor the switch state while toggling it to see if the ECU registers a change.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the roading switch and the steering controller for pinched wires causing a short-to-ground or short-to-power.

   Verify there are no CAN communication errors between the steering controller and the main vehicle controller.

   Remove the switch from the console and test it with a multimeter. If it shows continuity (closed circuit) regardless of the toggle position, the switch has failed internally.

   Park the machine on a level surface, apply the handbrake, and turn off the engine.

   Locate the roading switch.

   Depending on the model, it is typically located on the cab headliner, the right-hand armrest console, or on the back of the SmarTrax MD mechanical drive unit.

   Carefully pry the switch bezel from the console or remove the retaining screws to access the back of the switch.

   Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the switch.

   If the switch failed the continuity test, discard it and snap the new OEM roading switch into the harness connector.

   Seat the new switch back into the console or headliner panel.

   If the switch was functioning properly during testing, the fault lies in a shorted wiring harness.

   Trace the harness back to the steering controller, repair the shorted wires, and re-pin the connector if necessary.

   Turn the key on, navigate to the diagnostic display, and clear the 15252 fault code.

   Test the auto-guidance system to ensure it successfully engages in "Field Mode".
