Case IH 15253 – Steering Valve Controller: Roading switch voltage is outside of a valid range

The roading switch is a safety lockout toggle used to switch the machine between "field mode" (where autoguidance and steering valves are active) and "road mode" (where automated steering valves are locked out for safe transport). This fault code indicates that the controller is receiving a voltage signal from the roading switch circuit that falls outside the expected electrical parameters. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to power, or an internal failure of the switch itself.

   Manually toggle the roading switch back and forth to see if the error clears, as the switch can sometimes become stuck between states.

   Access the ISOBus diagnostic page on your AFS Pro display and monitor the live status of the roading switch to see if the controller registers the physical switch movement.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the roading switch and the steering controller for pinched wires, chafing, or loose/corroded connector pins.

   Using a multimeter, test the voltage at the switch connector to ensure it is receiving the correct reference voltage, and test the switch itself for continuity in both the ON and OFF positions.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and allow the system modules to power down completely.

   Locate the Switch

   Locate the roading switch. Depending on the model, it is typically found on the headliner console or the right-hand armrest.

   Remove the Switch

   Carefully pry the switch bezel or remove the console panel to access the back of the switch.

   Disconnect and Inspect

   Unplug the wiring harness connector from the switch. Inspect the terminals for pushed-out pins or corrosion.

   Replace or Repair

   If the switch failed the continuity test during diagnostics, replace it with a new OEM switch. If the switch is functional, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness causing the out-of-range voltage.

   Reassemble

   Plug the harness into the new switch and snap it back into the console.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Turn the ignition on. Verify that fault code 15253 is stored/inactive and clear it. Engage the autoguidance system in the field to ensure the steering valve responds, then flip the roading switch to verify it successfully locks out the steering valve.
