Case IH 15257 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Configured for incorrect steering valve type - switch state missing

Issue description

The Steering Valve Controller (SVC) is either misconfigured for the type of steering valve installed, or the main and safety microcontrollers within the steering system are receiving conflicting electrical states (resistance/voltage) from the Roading Switch.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Switch Position: Ensure the Roading Switch is fully toggled into the correct position. The system requires the switch to be in 'Field Mode' (electrohydraulic steering enabled) for autoguidance. If it is stuck between states, it will trigger a crosscheck fault.

  2. Inspect Switch Wiring: Access the back of the Roading Switch (typically located on the overhead headliner console or the armrest). Check for loose, backed-out, or disconnected wires in the connector.

  3. Check for CAN Communication Errors: Look for secondary codes (such as 'No GMS' or 'No ISOBUS Communication') on the Pro 1200 or AFS display, which indicate a break in communication between the steering node and the proportional steering valve.

  4. Verify Configuration via EST: If the tractor was recently updated or had a valve replaced, the steering system may need configuring with the dealer's Electronic Service Tool (EST). A mismatch between a bang-bang style valve and a proportional valve configuration will trigger code 15257.

Repair steps

  1. Cycle and Test the Switch

    Cycle the roading switch manually a few times to see if the fault clears. If it remains active, disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to test for proper resistance and continuity across its pins in both the 'Road' and 'Field' positions.

  2. Harness Pin-Out

    Trace the wiring harness from the Roading Switch to the Steering Valve Controller. Test the harness for shorts to ground, shorts to power, or open circuits. Repair any damaged wiring or replace corroded terminal pins.

  3. Replace the Switch

    If the switch fails the continuity/resistance test, replace the Roading Switch.

  4. Software Configuration (EST)

    If the switch and wiring are intact, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) configuration menu.

  5. Verify Valve Type

    Ensure the configured steering valve type in the software matches the physical valve installed on the tractor.

  6. Recalibrate

    Perform the Advanced Steering Valve calibration and the Wheel Angle Sensor calibration. (Note: On newer models, this must be completed without interruption; if the calibration fails verification, you must restart the process).

  7. Clear and Test

    Clear the fault codes. Test drive the tractor, transitioning from On-Road mode (hydraulic steering, ~6 turns lock-to-lock) to Off-Road mode (electrohydraulic steering, ~3.5 turns lock-to-lock) to ensure the crosscheck passes.
