Case IH 15260 – Steering Valve Main Controller / Safety Controller: Cut-off solenoid stuck open/closed. Spool movement test at transition from on-road to off-road failed.
Issue description
The steering valve's cut-off solenoid is physically stuck (either open or closed). The system detects this failure when it runs a spool movement test during the transition between on-road (high-speed transport) and off-road (field) modes.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Steiger T4B
- Stage V MR tractors equipped with CVT/MTA transmissions
- Puma
- Optum
- Magnum
- Farmall
Check the cause
Check the roading switch to verify that it is functioning correctly and sending the proper voltage signals, as the spool test relies on this transition.
Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the steering valve cut-off solenoid for corrosion, bent pins, or wire chafing.
Command the transition from on-road to off-road mode and listen or feel if the solenoid clicks to verify actuation.
Repair steps
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the battery ground.
Locate steering valve block
Locate the steering valve block (usually under the cab or near the firewall, depending on the model).
Remove electrical connector
Remove the electrical connector from the cut-off solenoid.
Inspect cartridge valve
Remove the solenoid coil and inspect the cartridge valve.
Clean and lubricate cartridge
If the spool is stuck due to hydraulic debris, carefully remove the cartridge, clean it with brake parts cleaner, and lubricate it with clean hydraulic oil.
Replace solenoid/cartridge assembly
If the solenoid coil is dead (fails an ohms resistance test) or the mechanical spool is permanently scored, replace the solenoid/cartridge assembly.
Reinstall and test
Reinstall, bleed the steering system if hydraulic lines were opened, and clear the codes. Test the on-road to off-road transition to ensure the spool movement test passes.
