Case IH 15264 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Cut-off solenoid stuck closed. Spool movement test at transition from on-road to off-road failed

Issue description

The system failed its automated spool movement safety test when switching from on-road to off-road mode because the cut-off solenoid is physically or electrically stuck closed, which may be exacerbated or caused by the controller being programmed for the wrong type of steering valve hardware.

Check the cause

  1. Connect the diagnostic service tool and verify the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) configuration matches the physical steering valve type installed on the tractor.

  2. Check the wiring harness and connector leading to the steering valve cut-off solenoid for continuity, shorts to ground, or open circuits.

  3. Inspect the valve block for physical debris, contamination in the hydraulic fluid, or mechanical binding of the spool.

  4. Verify the SVC and SRC software versions (e.g., version 2.02) to ensure a software glitch is not causing the transition test to fail.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Plug in the electronic service tool and pull the active fault stack from the Steering Valve Controller.

  2. Correct the Configuration

    If codes 15256-15258 are present alongside 15264, navigate to the Advanced Steering Configuration menu and flash the correct dataset for the specific steering valve type equipped on the machine.

  3. Inspect the Cut-Off Solenoid

    Locate the hydraulic steering valve block. Disconnect the electrical harness from the cut-off solenoid.

  4. Test and Clean

    Use a multimeter to test the solenoid coil resistance. If the coil is within specification, remove the solenoid cartridge from the valve body. Inspect the spool and the bore for scoring or debris that is keeping the valve stuck closed.

  5. Replace Components

    If the solenoid is mechanically seized or electrically dead, replace the cut-off solenoid. If the bore is heavily scored, the entire steering valve controller unit may need replacement.

  6. Re-test

    Reinstall the components, bleed the hydraulic steering circuit if necessary, and clear the fault codes. Cycle the tractor's roading switch to transition between on-road and off-road modes to force the spool movement test. Verify that code 15264 does not return.
