Case IH 15267 – Steering Valve Controller: Steering valve controller failure - LVDT frequency out of range

The LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) is an internal sensor used to precisely measure the position and movement of the steering valve spool. When the controller logs this code, it means the frequency of the signal returning from the LVDT sensor is outside the expected operating parameters. This typically indicates a failed internal sensor, a short/open circuit in the wiring, or a failure of the steering valve's electronic control head.

   Check for accompanying codes such as 15268/15269 (SPI communication lost/queue full) or 15321/15322 (LVDT signal A/B out of range), which can indicate a total failure of the controller head rather than just the sensor.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the steering valve controller and the tractor's main harness. Look for corrosion, moisture ingress, or chafed wires that could short the LVDT signal.

   Verify that the steering valve controller is receiving proper battery voltage and ground. Voltage drops can cause erratic LVDT frequency readings.

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to ensure safety and prevent short circuits.

   Locate steering control valve

   Locate the steering control valve (orbital valve), which is typically located at the base of the steering column or mounted on the front axle hydraulic block.

   Disconnect electrical harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the steering valve controller.

   Relieve hydraulic pressure

   Relieve all hydraulic system pressure.

   Disconnect hydraulic lines

   Mark and disconnect the hydraulic lines from the valve, capping them immediately to prevent fluid loss and system contamination.

   Remove faulty valve

   Unbolt and remove the faulty steering valve assembly.

   Install new valve

   Install the new steering valve, reconnect the hydraulic lines, and plug in the electrical harness.

   Bleed hydraulic system

   Bleed the hydraulic steering system according to the service manual.

   Perform calibration

   Connect the Case IH electronic service tool to perform a steering valve calibration. The new LVDT and controller must be synchronized with the tractor's main ECU to function properly.
