15268

Case IH 15268 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering valve controller failure - Software detected SPI communication queue full

Issue description

This fault indicates an internal communication bottleneck or software failure within the steering system. Specifically, the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) communication queue has reached its maximum capacity, meaning the controller is overwhelmed with data, unable to process incoming/outgoing signals fast enough, or experiencing an internal software lockup.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Farmall Series: 40, 45, 50, 85U, 95U, 105U, 115U
  • Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Series (Tier 4B / Stage V): 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380
  • Case IH Vestrum CVX Series: 100, 110, 120, 130

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying codes: Look for related steering valve controller faults that often trigger alongside this, such as 15269, 15270, or 15271.

  2. Power Cycle & Clear: Cycle the tractor's key power to perform a hard reset of the modules. Check if the SPI queue clears and the code goes from Active to Stored.

  3. Software Version Check: Connect the electronic service tool (EST) and verify the current software version on the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and the Steering Redundant Controller (SRC).

  4. Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the Steering Valve Controller for moisture, corrosion, or damaged pins that could be causing erratic data spikes leading to a full queue.

Repair steps

  1. Flash / Update Software

Because this is a "Software detected" queue error, the first official repair step is to re-flash or update the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and Steering Redundant Controller (SRC) to the latest software version (e.g., Version 2.02).

  2. Update Datasets

Ensure the Advanced Steering Configuration controller dataset is also updated to match the new software.

  3. Hardware Replacement (If Software Fails)

If the software flash fails or the code immediately returns, the internal SPI bus on the controller has failed.

  4. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

  5. Remove the Controller

Locate the Steering Valve Controller assembly. Disconnect the multi-pin harness connectors. Unbolt the controller from its mounting bracket.

  6. Install New Module

Mount the replacement Steering Valve Controller and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  7. Calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Use the EST to push the correct software and configuration datasets to the blank controller. Perform the mandatory steering angle and flow command crosscheck calibrations before returning the tractor to service.
