Case IH 15279 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering wheel sensor speed crosscheck between the steering valve main and safety controllers failed.

Issue description

There is a signal mismatch between the main processing unit and the redundant safety processing unit inside the steering valve controller. Both controllers monitor the steering wheel sensor to ensure safe operation. If the speed values calculated by the main controller and the safety controller do not match (crosscheck failure), the system logs this code and will likely disable auto-guidance or electronic steering to prevent unintended steering movements.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the software configuration using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to ensure gain parameters are configured equally in the Main and Safety controllers

  2. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the steering wheel sensor and the wheel angle sensor (WAS) to the Steering Valve Controller for chafed wires, moisture, or backed-out pins

  3. Inspect the physical mechanical linkage of the wheel angle sensor on the steering axle for looseness or damage

  4. Use the EST to monitor live data for the steering wheel sensor speed and wheel angle sensor position while slowly turning the steering wheel, looking for erratic data or signal dropouts

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

    Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic connector.

  2. Read and clear fault codes

    Read the fault codes to confirm if 15279 is active or stored. Clear the code and cycle the steering to see if it immediately returns.

  3. Update software

    If the code returns, perform a software update or re-flash of the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) and the Steering Redundant Controller (SRC). Ensure the advanced steering configuration dataset is up to date so that the gain parameters match perfectly between the two controllers.

  4. Calibrate steering system

    Perform a complete steering system and wheel angle sensor calibration using the EST.

  5. Test sensor circuit

    If calibration fails or the fault persists, disconnect the steering wheel sensor and test the circuit for proper reference voltage, ground, and continuity back to the SVC. Repair any wiring issues found.

  6. Replace sensor

    If the wiring is intact and the software is correct, replace the faulty steering wheel sensor / wheel angle sensor.

  7. Replace controller

    If a new sensor and recalibration do not resolve the crosscheck failure, the internal safety controller loop within the PVED-CLS steering valve is defective. You must replace the entire Steering Valve Controller assembly.
