Case IH 15281 - AST – AST (Auto Guidance / Steering) control subsystem / Steering Valve Controller: Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - CAN wheel angle sensor device enabled
Issue description
This indicates a software configuration mismatch. The steering controller has been programmed or configured to expect a CAN-bus-based wheel angle sensor, but the machine's actual hardware architecture does not support it, or the physical sensor installed on the steering axle is a standard analog sensor.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Farmall Tractors (40-45-50 CVT models)
- Case IH Maxxum series
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Magnum series
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Patriot Sprayers (3230, 3320, 3330, 4420, 4430)
Check the cause
Inspect the steering axle to determine what type of wheel angle sensor is actually installed on the machine (Analog vs. CAN-based).
Access the AST system configuration via the AFS Pro display (Pro 700 / Pro 1200) or the instrument cluster (H menus) to verify the current sensor settings.
If the machine is genuinely supposed to have a CAN wheel angle sensor, check the wiring harness and CAN bus connections at the sensor for damage, missing terminators, or communication loss.
Repair steps
Access the AST Configuration Menu
Enter the diagnostic/configuration mode. On some models, this is done by navigating the "H" menus using the switches on the instrument cluster (navigate to the R1 module, menu H3, and select the AST system). On others, use the AFS Pro display's dealer/setup settings.
Modify the Sensor Setting
Locate the steering valve controller configuration parameters. If the machine is equipped with a standard analog wheel angle sensor, disable the "CAN wheel angle sensor device" setting.
Save and Reboot
Save the new configuration settings and perform a key cycle (turn the ignition off, wait 10-15 seconds, and turn it back on) to allow the AST controller to reboot with the new parameters.
Recalibrate
Perform a full wheel angle sensor (Left/Right/Center) and steering valve calibration procedure to ensure the controller recognizes the correct sensor inputs and clears the deadband/fault codes.
