Case IH 15282 - AST – AST (Advanced Steering / Auxiliary Steering): Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Fault Detection

There is a configuration mismatch or communication error between the steering valve controller and the CAN-based wheel angle sensor. When this fault is detected, the Advanced Steering (AST) system disables the electrohydraulic 'Off-road' steering mode and forces the tractor into the default 'On-road' mode as a safety precaution.

   Verify Steering Mode & Symptoms: Check the ICU3 display to see if the tractor is locked in 'On-road' mode. Ensure the roading switch is not manually locking out the electrohydraulic steering.

   Access On-Board Diagnostics: Enter diagnostic mode via the instrument cluster. Navigate to the R1 module, menu H3, and select the AST system to verify if code 15282 is active alongside any CAN communication codes (e.g., 15244-15246).

   Inspect the CAN Wheel Angle Sensor: Locate the steering angle sensor (at the articulation hinge or front axle). Inspect the sensor, its linkage, and the wiring harness for physical damage.

   Check CAN Bus Integrity: Probe Diagnostic Connector #1. Verify CAN 1 HI (Pin C) and CAN 1 LO (Pin D) for proper voltage and resistance (typically 60 ohms across the bus with batteries disconnected).

   Harness & Connection Repair

   Disconnect the CAN wheel angle sensor and the steering valve controller. Clean the contacts with electronic cleaner and apply dielectric grease. Repair any chafed wires on the CAN bus lines between the sensor and the controller.

   Controller Configuration / Calibration

   Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the Steering Valve Controller configuration menu.

   Verify Configuration

   Verify that the 'CAN wheel angle sensor device' parameter is correctly enabled or disabled based on the specific tractor's factory build sheet. If the configuration is corrupted, re-flash the steering valve controller with the latest software.

   Sensor Calibration

   If the configuration is correct but the fault persists, perform a steering angle sensor calibration via the EST or the H-menu (if supported on the specific model) to re-establish the center, left-lock, and right-lock setpoints.

   Clear and Test

   Clear the fault codes in the AST module. Start the tractor, ensure the operator is seated, and toggle the roading switch to unlock the electrohydraulic steering. Turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock to confirm the ICU3 display shows 'Off-road' mode and the fault does not return.
