Case IH 15285 - AST – AST (Advanced Steering / Auto Steer) control subsystem / Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - configured for auxiliary steering device
Issue description
This code indicates a configuration mismatch within the steering system's software. The steering valve controller is programmed with a dataset that expects or enables an auxiliary steering device (such as FastSteer, Adaptive Steer Control, or a secondary steering system), but the physical hardware on the tractor does not match this configuration, or the parameter was incorrectly enabled.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Magnum series
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Maxxum series
- Case IH Farmall series
- Vestrum CVX series
Check the cause
Verify if the tractor is physically equipped with an auxiliary steering device (like a FastSteer valve or variable-rate steering hardware).
Access the AST control subsystem via the instrument cluster or the Pro 700/1200 display (R1 module, menu H3) to view the current configuration state.
Check the current software version and configuration dataset of the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) to see if an incorrect dataset was recently flashed during a service update.
Repair steps
Enter Diagnostic Mode
Enter the configuration mode by navigating the "H" menus using the switches on the instrument cluster. Navigate to the R1 module, menu H3, and select the AST system (press the dimming key to accept the menu selection).
Reconfigure the Controller
Locate the auxiliary steering device parameter and disable it so that the software configuration matches the tractor's physical build.
Warm Up the Machine
Start the tractor and operate the hydraulics until the hydraulic fluid reaches normal operating temperature. Note: Calibrations will fail if the oil is cold.
Perform Steering Valve Calibration
Navigate to the calibration menu on the display (e.g., CALIBRATION > CALIBR). Perform the steering valve deadzone calibration. This usually involves a coarse calibration followed by three fine calibrations where the wheels will turn automatically (ensure the area around the front axle is clear).
Perform Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) Calibration
Following the valve calibration, recalibrate the CAN wheel angle sensor to ensure the controller has accurate center, left, and right lock reference points.
Cycle Power
Turn the key off, wait for the controllers to power down completely, and restart the tractor to verify that fault code 15285 has cleared.
Reflash/Replace (If Necessary)
If the controller refuses to hold the configuration, the Advanced Steering Configuration dataset may need to be reflashed by a dealer using the Electronic Service Tool (EST). If the module has failed internally, the Steering Valve Controller must be replaced.
