Case IH 15288 - AST – AST (Advanced Steering) control subsystem / Steering Valve Controller: Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Hydraulic configuration checksum
Issue description
This code indicates that the AST (Advanced Steering / Auto Guidance) control subsystem has detected a checksum error in the hydraulic configuration data stored within the steering valve controller's memory (EEPROM). The configuration parameters are corrupted, missing, or mismatched with the vehicle's actual hydraulic setup, preventing the automated steering system from operating safely.

- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Farmall Series
- Case IH Puma Series

Check the cause
Check for accompanying AST fault codes (such as 15289, 15290, 15291, 15292) via the instrument cluster (R1 module, menu H3) which indicate other configuration or valve calibration checksum errors.
Verify recent service history to determine if the steering valve or controller was recently replaced, as unprogrammed 'blank' replacement valves will immediately throw configuration errors.
Inspect CAN Bus wiring harness and connectors at the steering valve controller for poor connections that can cause data corruption during startup.
Repair steps
Enter Diagnostic Mode
Enter the diagnostic mode by navigating the 'H menus' using the switches on the instrument cluster. Navigate to the R1 module, menu H3, and select the AST system. The lower LCD section of the display will show 'ch - - '.
Reprogram Valve Sequence
If the EHR stack or steering valve assembly was recently replaced, you must reprogram the number of each valve within the complete valve assembly using the OEM procedure, as they are supplied unconfigured.
Perform AST Steering Calibration
Using the instrument cluster or an advanced diagnostic tool (like Jaltest, Bosch ESI[truck], or Case IH EST), execute the 'steering calibration in the AST system'. This rewrites the hydraulic configuration and recalibrates the valve.
Clear EEPROM
If the calibration fails, use the diagnostic menu to clear the stored calibration information (EEPROM) and re-enter the correct hydraulic configuration parameters for the specific tractor model.
Replace the Controller/Valve
If the controller refuses to accept the configuration, or if the checksum error immediately returns after a successful calibration, the steering valve controller has suffered an internal memory (EEPROM) failure and the unit must be replaced.
