Case IH 15296 - AST – AST (Advanced Steering) / Steering Valve Controller: Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Wheel angle sensor calibration checksum
Issue description
The steering valve controller has detected missing, incomplete, or corrupted calibration data for the wheel angle sensor (WAS). Because the checksum of the saved calibration data does not match the expected mathematical value, the controller cannot trust the steering angle inputs. As a safety precaution, the AutoTrac / Auto-Steer system will remain disabled until a successful calibration is completed and a valid checksum is generated.

Check the cause
Inspect the wheel angle sensor mounted on the steering axle. Ensure the sensor body, linkage arms, and mounting brackets are physically intact, tight, and have not been bent by field debris.
Check the wiring harness and connectors between the wheel angle sensor and the steering valve controller. Look for moisture, corrosion, or chafed wires that could cause intermittent data loss.
Look for other active AST codes indicating 'Sensor voltage too high/low' (e.g., 3509.03 or 3509.04) or CAN communication timeouts. If present, the sensor or harness has failed hardware-wise and calibration will not fix the issue.

Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface with plenty of open, smooth ground available to drive forward and perform full steering locks.
Enter Calibration Mode
Access the steering calibration menu. Via Instrument Cluster: Navigate the H menus using the cluster switches. Go to the R1 module, menu H3, select the AST system, and press the dimming key to accept. Via Guidance Display (e.g., Pro 700, Viper 4+, Raven RS1): Navigate to the Steering / Wheel Angle Sensor Calibration screen.
Left Lock Calibration
Drive the machine forward at a slow, steady speed (typically 1 to 4 mph). Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left steering lock. Press the 'Left' or 'Accept' button to set the left WAS value.
Center Calibration
Steer the wheels straight ahead to the center position. Wait for the screen to advance, then press 'Accept' to set the Center WAS value.
Right Lock Calibration
Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right steering lock and press 'Accept' to set the Right WAS value.
Finalize
Save the calibration. The controller will generate a new checksum. Restart the machine and verify that fault code 15296 has cleared and the auto-steer system engages properly.
Replace Sensor
If the calibration fails repeatedly or the code immediately returns, the wheel angle sensor is internally faulty and must be replaced.
