Case IH 15296 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Wheel angle sensor calibration checksum
Issue description
The stored calibration data for the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) is missing, corrupted, or invalid. The controller uses a "checksum" to verify the integrity of the calibration data; when this checksum fails, the system recognizes that the steering geometry parameters are incorrect and will disable automated steering and autoguidance functions for safety.

Check the cause
Verify Sensor Output: Navigate to the steering diagnostics or CAN communication menu on your display (e.g., Pro 700, Viper 4). Check if the Wheel Angle Sensor counts actively change when you manually turn the steering wheel left and right. If the counts do not change, the sensor or harness is dead.
Physical Inspection: Inspect the Wheel Angle Sensor (typically located on the front axle steering cylinder or linkage). Look for bent linkage arms, loose mounting brackets, or physical damage to the sensor body.
Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Wheel Angle Sensor and the Steering Valve Controller for corrosion, moisture, or broken pins.
System Status: Ensure the steering valve is actively 'ENABLED' in the display settings and that the hydraulic oil temperature is above 5 °C (41 °F), as cold oil can prevent successful calibration.

Preparation
Start the machine and allow the hydraulic oil to warm up (must be above 5 °C / 41 °F). Apply the park brake to access the initial menus.
Enter Calibration Mode
Access the steering calibration menu. On some models, this is done by holding the Autoguidance system switch pressed while switching the ignition on. On display-driven models (like the Viper 4), navigate to the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) calibration screen.
Left Lock Calibration
Drive the machine forward slowly at 2–6 km/h (1–4 mph). Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left-hand steering lock. Press the button on the display to record the "Left" WAS value.
Center Calibration
Steer the machine so the wheels are perfectly straight ahead. Press the button to record the "Center" (or Neutral) WAS value.
Right Lock Calibration
Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right-hand steering lock and record the "Right" WAS value.
Save and Verify
Save the calibration. The system should display a confirmation message such as "Calibration OK (PASS)".
Cycle Power
Turn the machine off and back on. If fault code 15296 clears, the repair is complete. If the calibration fails to save or the code immediately returns, the Wheel Angle Sensor or the Steering Valve Controller has an internal memory/hardware failure and must be replaced.
