15298 - AST

Case IH 15298 - AST – AST (Advanced Steering Technology) / Steering Valve Controller: Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Peripherals configuration checksum

Issue description

This fault code indicates a software or memory error within the steering system. Specifically, the configuration data (checksum) for the steering valve's peripherals is corrupted, mismatched, or invalid. The controller is unable to verify its programmed parameters, which typically disables the auto-guidance/steering functions for safety.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Magnum
  • Farmall
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac

Check the cause

  1. Verify the code via H-Menu by navigating to the R1 module, menu H3, and selecting the AST system to confirm code 15298 is active.

  2. Check for related AST configuration codes (e.g., 15299 Protocol configuration checksum, 15301 Internal monitoring configuration checksum) which indicate a total configuration wipe or memory failure.

  3. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) via the 9-pin ISO 11783 diagnostics connector and check the software identifier and version currently loaded on the AST controller.

Repair steps

  1. Software Reconfiguration

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  2. Reflash/Push Configuration

Attempt to push the correct vehicle geometry and peripheral configuration payload back into the AST steering valve controller using the EST software.

  3. AST Steering Calibration

If the controller accepts the configuration, perform a full AST Steering Calibration procedure via the EST to relearn the steering valve spool neutral positions and wheel angles.

  4. Module Replacement (If Calibration Fails)

If the EST cannot communicate with the steering valve controller, or if the configuration checksum error immediately returns after a key cycle, the internal memory (EEPROM) of the steering valve controller has failed. Because the controller is typically integrated into the steering valve block, the entire steering valve assembly must be replaced.

  5. Post-Replacement

After installing a new valve, use the EST to program the new controller and perform the AST steering calibration.
