Case IH 153 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller: Electro Hydraulic Remote top link switch data invalid
Issue description
The controller receives illogical, conflicting, or out-of-range electrical signals from the hydraulic top link control switch (fender-mounted buttons). This often indicates that the switch is sending simultaneous 'raise' and 'lower' signals, or the voltage is outside the expected parameters.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- Magnum
- MX Magnum Series
- Magnum Series
- Steiger Series
- Puma Series
- TG Series
Check the cause
Inspect the rear fender-mounted hydraulic top link switches for physical damage, buttons mechanically stuck in the depressed position, or heavy dirt/mud accumulation.
Disconnect the switch and inspect the electrical connector for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.
Use a multimeter to test the switch for continuity. Verify it shows an open circuit at rest and proper continuity only when the 'extend' or 'retract' buttons are pressed.
Trace the wiring harness from the fender switch back to the TMF controller, looking for chafed wires, pinches, or breaks causing a short to ground or voltage.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Remove the Faulty Switch
Locate the top link switch on the rear fender. Reach behind the fender panel, depress the retaining tabs on the switch housing, and push the switch outward.
Disconnect the Harness
Unplug the wiring harness connector from the back of the switch.
Clean the Connection
Spray the harness connector with electrical contact cleaner to remove any dust or moisture. Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the connector pins to prevent future corrosion.
Install the New Switch
Plug the harness into the new OEM top link switch. Push the switch firmly back into the fender cutout until the retaining tabs click into place.
Test and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Access the tractor's diagnostic menu via the armrest monitor to clear the stored TMF 153 fault code.
Operational Test
Test the top link extend and retract functions using the newly installed fender switch to verify the repair.
