15303 - AST

Case IH 15303 - AST – AST (Auto Steering / Advanced Steering): AST: Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - Vehicle geometry configuration

Issue description

The steering valve controller has detected missing, corrupted, or incorrect vehicle geometry parameters. The controller relies on precise physical measurements of the tractor to accurately operate the steering valve during auto-guidance. When these parameters are invalid or fail a checksum validation, the system disables auto-steering for safety.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 115U
  • Maxxum
  • Puma
  • Magnum
  • Steiger
  • Quadtrac

Check the cause

  1. Verify Display Settings: Access the AFS Pro display (Pro 700 or Pro 1200) and navigate to the Vehicle Setup / Geometry configuration screens to check if physical measurements have been erased or entered incorrectly.

  2. Check CAN Bus Communication: Ensure the steering valve controller is communicating properly with the display via CAN 1 HI and CAN 1 LO at the diagnostic connector.

  3. Software Version Check: Check for software mismatches between the AFS display and the steering controller, which can cause configuration files to be rejected or corrupted.

Repair steps

  1. Power Cycle and Re-enter Data

Turn the ignition key to the ON position and allow the AFS display to fully boot. Navigate to the vehicle profile and manually re-enter the correct vehicle geometry measurements.

  2. Save and Calibrate

Save the configuration to push the data to the steering valve controller. Perform a basic steering calibration if prompted by the display.

  3. Software Flash

If the controller refuses to accept the geometry configuration (or if related checksum faults like 15304 or 15305 are also present), connect the electronic service tool (EST) to the diagnostic port and re-flash the steering valve controller and the AFS display to the latest software versions.

  4. Clear Codes

Use the service tool or display diagnostics to clear the fault stack. Cycle the key power and test the auto-guidance system to ensure the code does not return.

  5. Module Replacement

If the controller repeatedly drops its configuration memory after a power cycle, the internal memory of the steering controller is likely failed, and the module must be replaced.
