15306 - AST

Case IH 15306 - AST – AST (Auto-Steering / Advanced Steering): Incorrect steering valve controller configuration - GPS configuration

Issue description

This code indicates a configuration mismatch or communication error between the tractor's steering valve controller and the GPS/auto-guidance system (such as AFS AccuGuide, Raven Guidance, or Trimble NAV controllers). The system is detecting that the parameters set for the GPS guidance do not align with the steering valve's current calibration or hardware setup.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum 240
  • Magnum 275
  • Magnum 7120
  • Magnum 7140
  • Steiger 485
  • Steiger 540
  • Steiger 600
  • Steiger 620
  • Quadtrac 485
  • Quadtrac 540
  • Quadtrac 600
  • Quadtrac 620
  • Puma 210

Check the cause

  1. Verify Display Configurations: Access your AFS Pro 700, Pro 1200, or Raven display and verify that the GPS receiver and NAV controller are correctly configured to communicate with the specific steering valve installed on the machine.

  2. Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying AST subsystem codes that might isolate the issue, such as 15305 (GPS configuration checksum error) or 15307 (Steering wheel configuration error).

  3. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Verify the physical CAN bus connections and wiring harnesses between the GPS receiver, the NAV controller, and the steering valve controller.

  4. Check Steering Valve Spool: Ensure the steering valve spool is returning to neutral at power-up, as a stuck spool can prevent proper configuration.

Repair steps

  1. Enter Diagnostic Mode

Navigate the H menus using the switches on the instrument cluster. Go to the R1 module, menu H3, and select the AST system to view the live configuration status.

  2. Perform Software Calibrations

Execute a roll calibration via the AFS Pro display. Perform a full AccuGuide auto-guidance calibration to force the NAV controller and steering valve to sync their configurations.

  3. Inspect the Steering Valve (Hardware)

If software calibration fails, inspect the physical steering valve located under the dash or cab. Dealer mechanics note that internal plugs can fall out or spools can leak, causing configuration and operational failures.

  4. Reseal or Replace

If the valve is leaking or failing bench tests, it must be resealed and manually recalibrated, or replaced entirely.

  5. Final Calibration

After replacing or resealing the steering valve, you must perform a steering valve calibration, wheel rotational angle sensor calibration, and a steering wheel position sensor calibration to clear the 15306 code.
