Case IH 15315 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering valve controller failure - VPS configuration data checksum incorrect
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the configuration data stored for the VPS (Valve Positioning Sensor / Vehicle Positioning System) within the steering system has failed its checksum validation, meaning the configuration data file is corrupted, invalid, or mismatched with the controller's expected parameters.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH AFS Connect Magnum Series 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380
- Case IH Vestrum CVX Series 100, 110, 120, 130
- Case IH Optum / Steyr TERRUS Series 6250, 6270, 6300
- Case IH Farmall Series 40, 45, 50, 115U
Check the cause
Verify recent service history: Check if the tractor recently underwent a software update, battery replacement, or jump-start, as voltage spikes or interrupted software flashes are common causes of EEPROM checksum corruption.
Check battery and system voltage: Ensure the tractor's batteries are fully charged and the alternator is outputting correct voltage. Low voltage during controller boot-up can cause memory read errors.
Inspect harness connections: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors at the Steering Valve Controller for moisture, corrosion, or loose pins that could disrupt CAN bus communication during data initialization.
Read software versions: Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the current software version of the SVC and the Advanced Steering Configuration dataset.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's 9-pin diagnostic connector.
Backup Existing Data
If possible, attempt to back up any existing vehicle geometry and steering calibration data before proceeding.
Perform EOL Programming / Reflash
Navigate to the Steering Valve Controller (SVC) in the EST. You will need to re-flash the controller with the correct Advanced Steering Configuration dataset (e.g., dataset version 3.2) to overwrite the corrupted memory.
Re-calibrate Steering System
Once the configuration data is successfully written, perform a full steering system calibration. This includes the auto-calibration configuration, steering wheel configuration, and vehicle geometry configuration.
Clear Faults and Test
Clear the 15315 fault code. Cycle the ignition key off for 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
Hardware Replacement (If Necessary)
If the EST cannot communicate with the SVC to reflash it, or if the 15315 code returns immediately after a successful flash and key cycle, the internal EEPROM/memory of the Steering Valve Controller has failed physically. The controller (or the entire steering valve assembly, depending on the model) must be replaced.

Electronic Steering Valve Assembly
On some models, the SVC is integrated directly into the electro-hydraulic steering valve block and must be replaced as a single unit
