Case IH 15317 – Steering Valve Controller (SVC): Steering valve controller failure - 5V signal out of range

Issue description

The 5-volt reference signal (Vref) generated by the controller to power its associated sensors (such as the LVDT - Linear Variable Differential Transformer sensor) has fallen outside the acceptable voltage parameters. This is typically caused by a short circuit to ground, a short to voltage in the sensor wiring harness, a internally shorted sensor pulling the voltage down, or an internal failure within the controller itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check the connector at the steering valve LVDT sensor for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or moisture.

  2. Measure the 5V supply pin at the sensor connector. If out of range, disconnect the sensor to see if voltage returns to 4.8V - 5.2V (indicating an internally shorted sensor).

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the Steering Valve Controller and the steering valve for chafing, pinches, or shorts to chassis ground.

  4. Verify the hydraulic steering valve has not been incorrectly assembled or tampered with, as mechanical binding can cause sensor range errors.

  5. Ensure the Steering Valve Controller is receiving proper battery voltage and has a clean ground connection.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed chafed wires or corroded connectors between the SVC and the steering valve, repair or replace the affected harness section.

  3. Replace the Sensor/Valve

    If the LVDT sensor was found to be shorted (pulling the 5V reference down) or if there is a mechanical failure in the hydraulic steering valve, replace the sensor. Note: On many Case IH models, the LVDT sensor is integrated into the Steering Control Valve, requiring the replacement of the entire valve assembly.

  4. Replace the Controller

    If the wiring is intact, the sensor is unplugged, and the SVC is still not outputting a 5V reference signal, the Steering Valve Controller has failed internally and must be replaced.

  5. Reassembly and Calibration

    Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes. You must perform a steering system calibration/validation to ensure the new components are synchronized with the main and safety controllers.
