Case IH 15318 – Steering Valve Controller: Steering valve controller failure - Software LVDT calculation out of range
Issue description
The LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) sensor inside the electro-hydraulic steering valve measures the physical position of the steering spool. This fault code triggers when the steering controller's software calculates that the signal coming from the LVDT sensor falls outside of its expected, calibrated, or physically possible range. This indicates a mismatch between the commanded steering position and the actual measured position, pointing to a sensor failure, a wiring issue, or a mechanically stuck valve spool.

Check the cause
Check the diagnostic menu for accompanying circuit codes (such as 15319, 15321, or 15322) to narrow down the issue
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the PVED-CLS steering valve controller and the main machine harness for short circuits, open circuits, or corrosion
Verify that the steering valve controller is receiving the correct battery voltage and that the ground level is not above the upper limit
Check if the steering valve spool is mechanically stuck open, closed, or in a transition zone
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve all hydraulic pressure by turning the steering wheel back and forth.
Access the Steering Valve
Locate the PVED-CLS electro-hydraulic steering valve block on the tractor.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or open circuit in the harness leading to the LVDT, repair the damaged wiring or replace the connector pigtail.
Replace the Sensor/Controller
If the wiring is intact, the LVDT sensor or the entire PVED-CLS steering valve controller has failed internally. Disconnect the electrical connections and hydraulic lines (cap them immediately to prevent contamination). Unbolt and remove the defective steering valve controller/sensor assembly.
Install the New Component
Mount the replacement PVED-CLS controller or LVDT sensor. Reconnect all hydraulic lines and electrical harnesses.
Bleed the Hydraulic System
Start the tractor and slowly turn the steering wheel lock-to-lock several times to bleed air from the steering circuit.
Software Calibration
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). You must perform a steering valve calibration and configure the vehicle geometry/auto-guidance parameters, as the new PVED-CLS controller must be synced to the tractor's specific steering setup.
