Case IH 15320 – Steering Valve Controller (Danfoss PVED-CLS): Steering valve controller failure - ground level above upper limit

Issue description

The ground reference voltage for the steering valve controller has floated above the acceptable maximum threshold. This means the controller is experiencing excessive electrical resistance on its ground circuit, a loose ground connection, or a short-to-voltage on the ground line, causing the system to enter a safe state and disable auto-guidance.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the PVED-CLS controller on the electrohydraulic steering valve block.

  2. Inspect the 12-pin DEUTSCH connector (DT04-12PA-B016) at the PVED-CLS for water ingress, pushed-out pins, or corrosion.

  3. Measure resistance between Pin 2 (Power Ground) / Pin 3 (Sensor Power Ground) and a clean chassis ground (should be near 0 ohms).

  4. Perform a voltage drop test on the ground circuit with the system powered on to check for high resistance.

  5. Ensure all analog steering sensors (e.g., Wheel Angle Sensor) use the dedicated PVED-CLS sensor ground pin, as external grounding can cause offsets.

  6. Inspect main chassis grounds, including the main battery ground cable and cab-to-chassis ground straps.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent short circuits.

  2. Clean and Secure Chassis Grounds

    Trace the ground wires from the steering valve harness to their termination point on the chassis. Remove the ground ring terminals, clean the chassis surface down to bare metal using a wire brush, and reinstall the terminals securely.

  3. Repair Harness

    If the multimeter tests revealed high resistance in the harness between the 12-pin connector and the chassis, locate the chafed or corroded section of the wire. Splice in a new section of wire using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors.

  4. Clean the Connector

    Apply a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to the 12-pin DEUTSCH connector on the PVED-CLS. Allow it to dry, then apply a small amount of dielectric grease to prevent moisture ingress. Reconnect it securely.

  5. Re-test the System

    Reconnect the battery and power up the tractor.

  6. Clear Codes

    Use the AFS Pro display or the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault code stack.

  7. Module Replacement

    If the wiring harness tests perfectly (zero resistance to ground) but the 15320 code immediately returns, the internal ground circuit of the PVED-CLS controller has failed. The steering valve controller/actuator will need to be replaced and recalibrated.
