Case IH 15321 – PVED-CLS: Steering valve controller failure - LVDT signal A out of range

Issue description

The LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) is the internal spool position sensor located inside the electrohydraulic steering valve actuator. "Out of range" indicates that the sensor's signal (frequency, pulse width, or period) is falling outside the expected operational parameters. This typically points to an internal hardware failure of the sensor, an internal wiring/ground issue, or a mechanical issue preventing the spool from returning to its neutral threshold at boot-up.

Check the cause

  1. Check the PVED-CLS LED Diagnostic Interface for specific error flash codes

  2. Connect the Case IH EST or Danfoss PLUS+1 Service Tool and monitor the LVDT sensor signal (Component 6) for noise, erratic data, or signal dropouts

  3. Verify that the LVDT offset compensation value (Parameter P3089) is active (set to 255)

  4. Check the spool boot-up threshold (Parameter P3090) to ensure the spool is not mechanically sticking outside the tolerance threshold during boot-up

  5. Verify the sensor supply voltage and battery voltage to the PVED-CLS to ensure Vref and ground levels are within limits

Repair steps

  1. De-energize the System

    Power off the machine and bleed the hydraulic accumulator pressure down to at least 50 psi by pumping the brakes/steering to ensure there is no residual pilot pressure.

  2. Inspect Wiring

    Disconnect the harness from the PVED-CLS controller. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-back pins. Test the chassis harness for continuity back to the main cab controller.

  3. Isolate the Fault

    If the wiring harness, power, and ground are all within specification, the fault is internal to the PVED-CLS actuator/LVDT sensor. The LVDT sensor is integrated into the PVE control unit and cannot be serviced separately.

  4. Replace the Controller

    Unbolt the faulty PVED-CLS actuator module from the EHi/OSPE steering valve body and install the replacement unit.

  5. Calibration

    Once the new PVED-CLS is installed, connect the diagnostic tool. You must perform the LVDT offset compensation and a full steering calibration.

  6. Clear Codes

    Issue a DM3 request (Diagnostic Data Clear/Reset) to clear the previously active diagnostic trouble codes from both the PVED-CLS main controller (0x13) and the safety controller (0x5A).
