Case IH 15328 - AST – AST: SASA disconnected from OSPED

Issue description

Loss of communication, physical disconnection, or CAN signal failure between the SASA steering wheel sensor and the OSPED steering valve controller.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the physical wiring harness and connectors between the SASA sensor and the OSPED steering valve/PVED-CLS controller for broken wires or corroded pins

  2. Verify the supply voltage to the SASA sensor (requires 6–36 VDC or 9–32 VDC depending on the sensor version)

  3. Check the CAN V2.0B (J1939) signal output from the SASA sensor to ensure it is broadcasting properly and is not shorted

  4. Check for concurrent codes in the AST module, such as 15329 (Wheel Angle Sensor - CAN signal exceeds calibration limit) or 15667 (Timeout of steering angle sensor CAN message)

  5. If the steering spool is physically moving without command, inspect the OSPED valve's dynamic orifice, pilot pressure relief valve, and spool/sleeve set for hydraulic contamination or a stuck valve

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to ensure the PVED-CLS safety controller is powered down.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Remove the steering column covers. The SASA sensor is flanged directly between the steering column and the OSPED hydraulic steering unit.

  3. Remove the Steering Column

    Dismantle the steering column from the steering unit to expose the sensor.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    Unplug the CAN wiring harness from the faulty SASA sensor. Remove the old sensor and install the new SASA sensor over the steering wheel shaft rotor.

  5. Reassembly

    Bolt the steering column back onto the OSPED steering unit and reconnect the sensor's wiring harness.

  6. Calibration

    Power up the tractor. You must perform an AST steering calibration. Enter the diagnostic mode by navigating the H menus on the instrument cluster (Navigate to the R1 module, menu H3, and select the AST system) to calibrate the steering angle sensor.
