Case IH 15337 – PVED-CLS: PVED-CLS CAN Rx Buffer Overflow

Issue description

The steering controller's internal Receive (Rx) buffer is being overwhelmed by an excessive number of CAN bus messages intended for the PVED-CLS component. Specifically, the system is detecting an excessive number of Priority 3 (safety-related) messages, which maxes out the buffer's operational range. This is classified as a severe hardware or communication failure. When this occurs, the steering valve will typically default to a safe state, disabling the electrohydraulic auto-guidance and returning the machine to manual hydraulic steering.

Check the cause

  1. Use a CAN analyzer or the Danfoss PLUS+1 Service Tool to monitor the bus load. Look for a babbling node (another module on the network that is malfunctioning and spamming Priority 3 messages).

  2. Inspect the physical PVED-CLS module. It is equipped with a diagnostic LED that indicates its current bootloader or operational state.

  3. Connect the PLUS+1 Service Tool to verify the firmware version of the PVED-CLS. Check the error history and SPN logs to see if the buffer overflow is an isolated event or a continuous hard fault.

  4. Disconnect other intelligent devices on the steering CAN bus one by one (such as the SASA steering wheel sensor, GPS receiver, or auto-steer display) to see if the Rx buffer overflow condition clears.

Repair steps

  1. De-energize the system

    Ensure the machine is parked, turned off, and the PVED-CLS is de-energized before servicing the electrohydraulic steering system.

  2. Resolve CAN flooding

    If diagnostic checks revealed that another module (e.g., a faulty GPS receiver or SASA sensor) is spamming the network, repair or replace that specific module.

  3. Replace the PVED-CLS

    If the CAN bus traffic is normal but the PVED-CLS internal buffer is physically corrupted or failing to process data, disconnect the 12-pin Deutsch connector (DT04-12PA-B016) from the PVED-CLS. Unbolt the PVED-CLS actuator from the OSPE or EHi steering valve block and install the new PVED-CLS controller.

  4. Flash and configure the new module

    Open the PLUS+1 Service Tool. Flash the Main and Safety Controller with the correct firmware revision for your specific Case IH machine. Install the Diagnostic Data Files (.P1D file) and download the machine-specific parameter configuration to the new valve.

  5. Calibration

    Perform a spool calibration and Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS) calibration to ensure accurate steering movements before returning the tractor to the field.
