Case IH 15544 – ARM: Bypass Valve Solenoid Short to Battery
Issue description
The control module has detected a short circuit to the positive battery terminal in the electrical circuit of the bypass valve's solenoid within the auxiliary control system. This means the solenoid is receiving continuous or excessive voltage, which can lead to improper operation of the bypass valve and potentially damage the solenoid or its controlling module.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the auxiliary control system's bypass valve solenoid for chafing, melting, or corrosion.
Check the connectors for a secure fit, and inspect the pins for corrosion or damage.
Disconnect the electrical connector from the bypass valve solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the two pins. The resistance should be within the range of 4 to 8 ohms; a reading significantly outside this range indicates a shorted solenoid that needs replacement.
With the solenoid and the controller disconnected, use a multimeter to check for a short to power on the signal wire to the solenoid (there should be no voltage present on this wire with the key on and the solenoid de-energized).
Check for continuity between the controller connector and the solenoid connector to ensure there are no open circuits in the harness.
If a spare 12V power source is available, carefully apply power and ground to the solenoid's terminals. A functional solenoid should produce an audible 'click', and the absence of a click or the solenoid becoming excessively hot indicates a failure.
Repair steps
Prepare machine for service
Ensure the tractor is on a level surface, the parking brake is engaged, and the engine is off. Disconnect the battery before starting any electrical repairs.
Locate the bypass valve solenoid
Locate the auxiliary control system valves in a valve block on the rear of the tractor. The bypass valve solenoid will be one of the solenoids mounted on this block. A parts diagram or service manual for the specific tractor model may be needed for precise identification.
Repair wiring harness
If a short or open circuit is found in the wiring harness, repair or replace the damaged section of wire. Use appropriate connectors and heat shrink tubing to ensure a durable and weather-resistant repair.
Replace faulty solenoid
Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Carefully remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil to the valve body and slide the old solenoid coil off the valve stem. When installing the new solenoid, ensure any O-rings or seals are correctly placed and lubricated with clean hydraulic fluid. Slide the new solenoid onto the valve stem, secure it with the retaining hardware without overtightening, and reconnect the electrical connector.
Reassemble and test
Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on and clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard diagnostic system. Start the tractor and operate the auxiliary hydraulic system to verify that the repair has been successful and the fault code does not reappear.
