15666 - AST

Case IH 15666 - AST – AST: Steering not calibrated

Issue description

This condition occurs when the advanced steering system detects that the required calibration parameters for the wheel angle sensor and the electro-hydraulic steering spool have not been successfully completed or saved.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Steiger
  • Magnum
  • Puma
  • Optum
  • Farmall
  • Patriot 3230
  • Patriot 3320
  • Patriot 3330
  • Patriot 4420
  • Patriot 4430
  • Axial-Flow Flagship

Check the cause

  1. Verify module communication: Ensure the PVED-CLS controller is detected online to rule out CAN bus communication issues or a dead module.

  2. Check for related fault codes, such as 15667 (Timeout of steering angle sensor CAN message).

  3. Inspect the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS): Ensure it is physically intact, the linkage is not bent, and it outputs approximately 2.50V when centered.

  4. Check the electro-hydraulic steering spool: Ensure it is functioning and there are no active hydraulic faults, as the spool must physically move during calibration.

Repair steps

  1. Enter Diagnostic/Calibration Mode

Via Instrument Cluster: Navigate the 'H' menus using the switches on the instrument cluster. Go to the R1 module, menu H2, and press the dimming key to accept. Alternatively, via AFS Pro Display / Autopilot Toolbox: Navigate to Tools / Setup and Diagnostics, click the Calibration Tab, and select Auto Steering Calibration Mode.

  2. Calibrate the Wheel Angle Sensor (WAS)

Follow the on-screen prompts to turn the steering wheel fully to the left lock, right lock, and center. The system must successfully register and save these limits.

  3. Calibrate the Steering Spool

Initiate the spool calibration, which will automatically actuate the steering valve to learn the hydraulic flow parameters. Note: Spool calibration is only allowed once the WAS calibration has been successfully completed.

  4. Finalize calibration

Save the calibration values, exit the diagnostic menu, and cycle the key. The 15666 fault code should now move to an inactive state and can be cleared.
