Case IH 15667 – MTA CCM (Cab Control Module) or PVED-CLS: Timeout of steering angle sensor CAN message

Issue description

This code indicates an Advanced Steering (AST) generic configuration error or a loss of CAN communication. Specifically, it triggers when at least one advanced steering function (such as VRS, NAV, or ISOSteering) is configured as 'present' in the system, but the PVED-CLS (the electrohydraulic steering valve controller) is configured as 'not present,' or the system has lost the CAN signal from the steering angle sensor.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Steiger & Quadtrac series (370, 420, 470, 500, 540, 580, 620)
  • Magnum series (180 through 400)
  • Puma series
  • Maxxum series
  • Optum series
  • Farmall series
  • Vestrum
  • Quantum
  • 100-225 series
  • MX210
  • MX230

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check the CCM configuration to ensure the PVED-CLS module is configured as 'present'

  2. Inspect the CAN bus harness connecting the steering angle sensor, the PVED-CLS controller, and the CCM for broken wires, corrosion, or loose connector pins

  3. Verify the power supply to the PVED-CLS module (must be a standard 12V/24V supply; drops below 9V will cause faults and module offline issues)

  4. Physically inspect the steering angle sensor on the steering axle for impact damage, loose mounting brackets, or water intrusion

Repair steps

  1. Correct Software Configuration

If the diagnostic tool reveals a configuration mismatch, update the CCM settings to ensure the PVED-CLS is recognized as 'present' on the network. Clear the code and cycle the key to see if the fault returns.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the configuration is correct but the CAN timeout persists, repair any damaged wiring or replace the affected harness section between the steering angle sensor and the PVED-CLS.

  3. Replace Faulty Components

If the steering angle sensor is outputting erratic or no data, remove the sensor from the steering axle and install a replacement. If the PVED-CLS module itself is unresponsive to the CAN bus, replace the module on the electrohydraulic steering valve assembly.

  4. System Calibration

After replacing either the steering angle sensor or the PVED-CLS controller, you must perform a steering system calibration (calibrating the EH valve spool and the steering position sensor) using the EST before returning the tractor to service.
