Case IH 15972 - 09 - CSM – Vehicle Control Unit (VCU): CAN bus communication failure between the Cab Suspension Module (CSM) and the main Vehicle Control Unit (VCU)

Issue description

The VCU is not receiving the expected periodic heartbeat or status messages from the CSM over the tractor's J1939 CAN data link. When this occurs, the active cab suspension will default to a hard/stiff mode or fail to level properly.

Check the cause

  1. Verify System Voltage: Ensure the tractor batteries are fully charged and the alternator is functioning properly. Low voltage can cause peripheral modules like the CSM to drop off the CAN bus.

  2. Inspect Fuses and Relays: Check the cab fuse panel for blown fuses or faulty relays supplying power to the CSM.

  3. Harness Inspection: Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the CSM (typically located under the rear of the cab structure) to the VCU. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or damage from field debris.

  4. Connector Check: Disconnect the CSM and VCU connectors to check for pushed-back pins, corrosion, or moisture ingress.

  5. CAN Bus Resistance Test: With the battery disconnected, measure the resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic port or CSM connector. It should read approximately 60 ohms (indicating both 120-ohm terminating resistors on the network are intact).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Modules

    Locate the Cab Suspension Module (CSM) under the cab and the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU).

  3. Clean and Reseat Connectors

    Disconnect the wiring harness from the CSM. Apply a high-quality electrical contact cleaner to the pins and receptacles. Allow it to dry, apply dielectric grease to prevent future moisture intrusion, and firmly reconnect the harness.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the diagnostic continuity test revealed an open or shorted CAN wire, splice and solder the damaged section using a CAN bus-approved twisted-pair repair method, and seal with heat-shrink tubing.

  5. Power Up and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or Jaltest AGV diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 15972 - 09 fault code.

  6. Test Operation

    Start the tractor and cycle the cab suspension through its firmness settings via the AFS Pro monitor to verify the CSM is communicating and the suspension responds.

  7. Software Update / Module Replacement

    If the wiring is intact and the fault persists, the CSM may require a software re-flash (e.g., updating to the latest software version) or complete hardware replacement.
