15980 - 09 - CSM

Case IH 15980 - 09 - CSM – Cab Suspension Module (CSM): Communication failure between the Cab Suspension Module (CSM) and the main vehicle controller

Issue description

Fault Code 15980 - 09 - CSM indicates a communication failure between the Cab Suspension Module (CSM) and the main vehicle controller over the tractor's CAN bus network. The 09 FMI means 'Abnormal Update Rate,' indicating the CSM is not receiving the expected data messages from the vehicle controller within the required timeframe.

Applies to these machines

  • MAGNUM AFS Connect
  • AFS Connect Magnum Tractor series (Tier 4B) CVT Transmission models: 180, 200, 220, 240, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380
  • AFS Connect Magnum Tractor series (Tier 4B) Full Power Shift models: 180, 200, 220, 250, 280, 310, 340
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Optum

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage and alternator output to ensure proper voltage to peripheral modules

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness connecting the CSM to the vehicle controller for chafing, pinches, or rodent damage

  3. Disconnect the CSM and vehicle controller connectors to inspect pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, pushed-back pins, or spread terminals

  4. Perform a CAN bus resistance test across CAN High and CAN Low pins at the CSM connector (should read approximately 60 ohms)

  5. Verify the CSM is receiving proper switched power, constant power, and has a clean ground connection

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Access the Modules

Locate the Cab Suspension Module (CSM) and the Vehicle Controller (typically located in the cab electronics bay or under the right-hand console).

  3. Clean and Re-seat Connectors

If diagnostics showed no hard wiring failures, apply electrical contact cleaner to the harness connectors for both modules. Apply dielectric grease to the weather seals (not directly on the pins) and firmly reconnect them, ensuring the locking tabs click into place.

  4. Repair Wiring

If the continuity test revealed an open or shorted CAN wire, locate the break in the harness and repair it using OEM-approved heat-shrink butt connectors, or replace the affected harness section.

  5. Module Replacement

If power, ground, and CAN bus integrity are all verified as good, the CSM itself has likely suffered an internal communication failure. Remove the mounting hardware, swap in the new CSM, and reconnect the harness.

  6. Software Calibration

Reconnect the battery. If a new CSM was installed, connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to flash the module with the latest software and perform the cab suspension calibration routine.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Clear the inactive 15980 - 09 fault code and test-drive the tractor to ensure the active cab suspension responds correctly and the code does not return.
