Case IH 15980 - 31 - CSM – Cab Suspension Module (CSM) and Body Control Module (BCM) / Vehicle Controller: Cab suspension communication fault - cab suspension communication fault with vehicle controller

This fault indicates a Controller Area Network (CAN) bus communication failure between the Cab Suspension Module (CSM) and the Vehicle Controller. The vehicle controller is either not receiving the expected heartbeat/status messages from the CSM, or the messages being sent are not recognized due to a software mismatch or wiring failure.

   Check the CAN bus wiring and plug-in connections between the Cab Suspension Module (CSM) and the Vehicle Controller for corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafing.

   Perform a mechanical test of the cab suspension components to ensure smooth adjustment action and verify that the suspension hasn't mechanically collapsed, which can trigger secondary electronic faults.

   Check the software versions on the CSM and the BCM. A software mismatch between the modules can cause the vehicle controller to reject the CSM's CAN messages.

   Look for associated ARU (Armrest) or EDC codes that might indicate a drop in suspension pressure or a sensor failure.

   Secure the cab

   Before performing any physical work, ensure the cab is safely supported. The cab suspension has an upward travel of 50 mm which must be taken into consideration for height data and clearance when working underneath.

   Repair wiring and connectors

   If the diagnostic checks reveal a damaged plug-in connection at the CSM or Vehicle Controller, release the damaged connection and repin or create a new plug-in connection using an OEM replacement plug.

   Reflash and update modules

   If the wiring is intact, connect the dealer diagnostic tool (EST) and reflash the EEPROM/software on both the CSM and the Vehicle Controller to the latest versions to resolve CAN handshake issues.

   Replace the Cab Suspension Module

   If the CSM fails to communicate with the diagnostic tool entirely, the module has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

   Calibrate and test drive

   After replacing the module or repairing the wiring, clear the fault codes. Take the tractor for a test drive to ensure the cab suspension operates smoothly in all modes and the fault does not return.
