Case IH 15991 – AST (Advanced Steering) controller or CCM (Cab Control Module): PVED-CLS is configured as 'not present' but PVED-CLS is detected online

Issue description

This fault indicates a software configuration mismatch on the tractor's CAN bus network. The tractor's main controller is receiving active communication from the PVED-CLS steering valve controller, but the tractor's software configuration parameters are set to indicate that this module is not installed on the machine.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Steiger (AFS Connect models)
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Puma and Optum series
  • Case IH Farmall (specific CVT/cab configurations)

Check the cause

  1. Verify Physical Hardware: Inspect the steering valve block (usually located under the cab or near the front axle depending on the model) to confirm if the Danfoss PVED-CLS actuator is physically installed.

  2. Check Recent Installations: Determine if an aftermarket auto-steer kit (e.g., Agri-Steer or Trimble Autopilot) was recently installed or plugged into the CAN bus, which might be broadcasting PVED-CLS messages.

  3. Review Software Configuration: Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check the tractor's Advanced Steering (AST) configuration. Look for the parameter defining the presence of the PVED-CLS or NAV controller.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port.

  2. Navigate to configuration menu

Navigate to the configuration/programming menu for the CCM (Cab Control Module) or AST (Advanced Steering).

  3. Locate dataset

    Locate the steering configuration dataset.

  4. Update configuration (if equipped)

If the tractor IS equipped with the PVED-CLS valve: Change the configuration parameter for the PVED-CLS (or Advanced Steering/NAV option) from 'Not Present' to 'Present'.

  5. Disconnect rogue modules (if not equipped)

If the tractor is NOT supposed to have this valve: Locate the source of the rogue CAN bus messages. Disconnect any incorrectly installed aftermarket steering harnesses or modules that are falsely broadcasting the PVED-CLS online signal.

  6. Save changes

Save the configuration changes in the EST.

  7. Perform key cycle

Perform a key cycle (turn the ignition off, wait 30 seconds for the modules to power down, and turn it back on) to allow the CAN bus to re-initialize.

  8. Clear fault codes

    Clear the inactive fault codes.

  9. Calibrate steering system

If the configuration was updated to 'Present,' you may need to perform a steering angle sensor calibration and a PVED-CLS valve calibration to ensure the system operates safely.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • ECU (PVED-CLS) / Electrohydraulic Steering Valve Controller

The PVED-CLS mounts directly to the Danfoss OSPE or EHi steering unit. If replaced, the new module must be flashed with the correct Case IH application software, as the Main and Safety controllers inside the PVED-CLS must have matching, compatible bootloader and application software versions to function.
