Case IH 15998 – AST (Advanced Steering) Controller or Vehicle Controller (CCM - Cab Control Module): PVED-CLS is configured as present, but PVED-CLS is not detected 'online' or CRC control on at least 1 Operation Status Message fails.
Issue description
The tractor's main computer expects to communicate with the auto-steering valve actuator over the CAN bus network, but the actuator is either completely unresponsive (offline) or the data packets it is sending are corrupted (failing the Cyclic Redundancy Check / CRC).
Applies to these machines
7 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Magnum series
- Case IH Optum series
- Case IH Steiger series
- Case IH Farmall series
Check the cause
Verify Configuration: If the tractor does not have auto-guidance installed, the AST configuration software may be incorrectly programmed. The logic must be updated via the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to set the PVED-CLS to 'not present'.
Inspect the Harness: Check the electrical connector directly at the PVED-CLS steering valve actuator. Look for moisture intrusion, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Test Power and Ground: Verify that the PVED-CLS module is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground connection.
Test the CAN Bus: Check the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines between the vehicle controller and the PVED-CLS for continuity, open circuits, or shorts to ground/power.
Check for Related Codes: Look for other CAN bus or steering-related codes (such as 15991, 15993, or 15331) which might indicate a broader network failure or a software mismatch.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Repair Wiring (If Applicable)
If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken wire or corroded connector at the steering valve, repair the CAN bus wiring harness or replace the pigtail connector.
Replace the Actuator
If the wiring, power, ground, and CAN bus integrity are all verified to be good, the PVED-CLS actuator has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.
Install New Module
Unbolt the faulty PVED-CLS actuator from the Danfoss OSPE steering valve body and install the replacement unit.
Calibrate the System
Reconnect the battery. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). You must clear the recorded fault codes and perform a steering system calibration, as the new PVED-CLS module will need to sync with the main controller.
