Case IH 15999 - AST – AST (Advanced Steering) controller: Unknown AST error code
Issue description
Indicates that the Advanced Steering (AST) system has encountered an undefined or unrecognized error state that does not map to a standard, specific fault code. It typically points to an internal logic error, an unexpected signal, or a software glitch within the electrohydraulic steering valve actuator.

Check the cause
Check for Concurrent Codes: Enter the on-board diagnostic mode via the instrument cluster (navigate to the R1 module, menu H3, and select the AST system). Look for other active AST codes (like 15990-15998) that might provide more context.
Verify Power Supply: Check the power supply at the controller harness. If the voltage drops below 9V, the electrohydraulic system will not function correctly and may log erratic codes.
Inspect CAN Communication: Check the CAN bus wiring (specifically the 9-pin ISOBUS and PVED-CLS connectors) for corrosion, moisture ingress, or damaged pins.
Check Steering Inputs: Verify that the Autoguidance Engage / Variable Ratio Activation switches are not shorted to ground or power, as these inputs feed directly into the AST logic.
Repair steps
Clear and Retest
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible diagnostic scanner (e.g., Jaltest). Clear the fault code memory and cycle the key to see if the 'Unknown' error was a transient software glitch.
Perform AST Steering Calibration
Initiate the calibration procedure via the EST or the tractor's H-menu to resolve potential AST configuration errors.
Flash / Update Software
Check if there is a newer software version available for the AST controller / PVED-CLS. Flashing the module with updated firmware often resolves 'Unknown' logic errors.
Replace the Controller
If the code persists, the calibration fails, and the wiring harness tests good, the internal circuitry of the PVED-CLS is likely compromised. The steering valve controller/actuator must be replaced.
Post-Repair Calibration
After replacing the PVED-CLS, configure the new module to the tractor (setting NAV/ISOSteering to 'present') and perform a final AST steering calibration.
