Case IH 16 – Transmission ECM: Gear 1 Switch High Error

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected an anomalous electrical condition on the Gear 1 switch circuit—specifically, the circuit is experiencing a short to 5V, a short to 12V, or an open circuit.

Applies to these machines

  • JXC
  • Farmall 85C
  • Farmall 95U
  • Farmall 105U
  • Farmall 110C
  • JX Series
  • Maxxum MX Series
  • TN60A
  • TN70A
  • TN75A
  • TN85A
  • TN95A
  • TNDA
  • TNSA

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the Gear 1 / Power Shuttle switch to the Transmission ECM for chafed wires, melted insulation, or disconnected plugs

  2. Probe the switch connector with a multimeter to verify if the circuit is improperly receiving 5V or 12V reference voltage (indicating a short to power)

  3. Test the switch for proper continuity when mechanically engaged and disengaged to determine if it has failed internally

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental transmission engagement during the repair.

  2. Locate the Switch

Locate the faulty switch. Depending on the exact model, this will either be on the external transmission housing, under the side console, or integrated into the forward/reverse shuttle lever assembly.

  3. Document Connections

Take a photo of the wire connections before disconnecting. These switches often have multiple connectors that look similar, and crossing them will cause further transmission faults.

  4. Remove the Switch

Disconnect the electrical harness and unthread/unbolt the faulty switch from its mounting point.

  5. Clean the Area

Clean the mounting area and use contact cleaner on the electrical connector terminals to ensure no moisture or dirt compromises the new connection.

  6. Install the New Part

Install the new OEM replacement switch and reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

  7. Test Operation

Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and test the power shuttle and gear engagement to confirm the fault code is cleared and direction changes are smooth.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Power Shuttle Switch / Forward & Reverse Shuttle Lever Switch
