Case IH 160 – PTO Controller: PTO Clutch is Slipping Too Much

Issue description

This fault code is triggered when the system detects excessive slippage in the Power Take-Off (PTO) clutch pack. The tractor's software continuously monitors and compares the PTO input speed (calculated using the engine RPM signal from the alternator) against the PTO output speed (measured by the PTO shaft speed sensor). If the difference between the input and output speeds exceeds the programmed limit for a sustained period (often 5 seconds or longer), the system logs Code 160 and automatically disengages the PTO to prevent catastrophic clutch failure.

Check the cause

  1. Check implement load to ensure it is not jammed or too heavy for the tractor's PTO rating (mechanical slip cause).

  2. Verify alternator output and belt tension, as a slipping alternator belt or failing alternator can send a false high engine RPM signal (false slip calculation cause).

  3. Test the PTO output speed sensor and its wiring harness for continuity, shorts, or debris (sensor/wiring cause).

  4. Test the PTO clutch pressure port for regulated hydraulic pressure, typically around 300 PSI (hydraulic supply or internal leak cause).

  5. Check for accompanying codes like 175 or transmission pressure codes to rule out broader hydraulic issues.

Repair steps

  1. Drain Fluid

    Relieve all hydraulic pressure and drain the rear frame/transmission hydraulic fluid.

  2. Remove PTO Housing

    Unbolt and remove the rear PTO housing/cover assembly from the tractor chassis to access the clutch pack.

  3. Disassemble the Clutch Pack

    Remove the retaining rings and extract the alternating friction discs and steel separator plates.

  4. Inspect Hard Parts

    Check the PTO drive shaft splines for heavy wear or twisting. Inspect the clutch drum and piston for scoring.

  5. Replace Seals and Discs

    Discard the old friction discs (which will likely be glazed, thinned, or burnt) and steel plates. Replace the internal hydraulic piston seals (O-rings/lip seals) that apply pressure to the clutch pack, as hardened seals cause the pressure leaks that lead to slipping.

  6. Reassembly

    Soak the new friction discs in clean hydraulic fluid for at least 30 minutes prior to installation. Reassemble the clutch pack, ensuring the correct stack-up order of friction and steel plates.

  7. Reinstall and Refill

    Mount the PTO housing back onto the tractor with a new gasket. Refill the system with the OEM-specified hydraulic/transmission fluid.

  8. Calibration/Testing

    Run the tractor, engage the PTO under a light load, and perform a hydraulic pressure test to verify the leak is resolved and the code does not return.
