Case IH 161-04 - DEC – DEC: Transmission Input Shaft Speed Voltage Below Normal / Shorted to Low Source

Issue description

The controller is detecting that the electrical circuit for the transmission input shaft speed sensor has shorted to ground or is returning a voltage that is below the normal operating threshold. This can cause erratic shifting, failure to shift, or a complete loss of drive.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Check the wiring harness and the sensor connector (Connector X-513) for chafing, corrosion, or physical damage that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Resistance Test: Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance. A healthy input shaft speed sensor on these systems typically measures around 3,000 ohms.

  3. Voltage Output Test: The sensor is a magnetic pickup that produces an AC voltage as the countershaft gear teeth move past the end of the sensor. At idle, the speed sensor output should be low and increase as the speed of the shaft increases.

  4. Monitor via EST: If available, use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's onboard diagnostic screen to monitor the live RPM reading of Sensor 1 (Input Shaft Speed). Look for erratic drop-outs or a constant zero reading while the engine is running.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

    The input shaft speed sensor is accessible externally on most models. Depending on the specific transmission, it is typically located on the side of the transmission housing (often near the PTO cover on the right side) or on top of the transmission housing.

  2. Disconnect the Battery

    Ensure the tractor is off and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Unplug the electrical connector. Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor to the transmission housing and carefully pull the sensor straight out.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt.

  5. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use the tractor's H-Menu (e.g., navigating to "HC" to clear stored error codes) or the EST to clear the archived 161-04 fault code.

  7. Test Drive

    Start the tractor and verify that the transmission shifts through the gears normally without the code returning.
