Case IH 16114 – ATC (Automatic Temperature Control): Outlet sensor is shorted to ground

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the HVAC duct outlet temperature sensor that is below the minimum acceptable threshold (near 0 volts). This condition is caused by either an internal short circuit within the sensor itself or a short to ground in the wiring harness connecting the sensor to the controller.

   Visually inspect the HVAC outlet temperature sensor (B-053 / X753) wiring harness for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could be grounding out against the cab frame.

   Perform a sensor resistance test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the outlet sensor and measure resistance across the two pins. If it reads continuity (near 0 ohms), the sensor is internally shorted.

   Perform a harness short-to-ground test: If the sensor tests good, disconnect it and test the signal wire on the harness side for continuity to a known chassis ground. If continuity exists, trace the harness back to the ATC module to locate the short.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Sensor

   Remove the necessary cab interior trim panels or louver assemblies to access the HVAC ducting where the outlet temperature sensor is mounted (usually located just downstream of the evaporator core in the main duct).

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the sensor. Twist or unclip the sensor to pull it free from the HVAC duct housing.

   Install the New Sensor

   Insert the replacement OEM temperature sensor into the duct and secure it.

   Reconnect

   Plug the 2-pin electrical connector back into the sensor. Reinstall any cab trim panels that were removed.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Use a Case IH diagnostic scan tool (like Jaltest or the OEM EST tool) or the tractor's onboard ATC diagnostic menu to clear the inactive 16114 fault code.

   Verify Repair

   Run the tractor and turn on the ATC system. Verify that the system regulates cab temperature correctly and that the fault code does not return.
