Case IH 16115 – ATC (Automatic Temperature Control): Evaporator sensor open or shorted to power

Issue description

The control module detects either infinite resistance (an open circuit, such as a broken wire or unplugged connector) or a short to a 12V power source on the evaporator temperature sensor's signal circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Perform a visual inspection of the evaporator temperature sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Perform a sensor resistance test by measuring resistance across the sensor pins (infinite resistance indicates an open/faulty sensor).

  3. Perform a harness voltage check with ignition ON by measuring voltage on the sensor harness connector signal wire to ground (12V+ indicates a short to power).

  4. Perform a harness continuity check with ignition OFF by disconnecting the ATC module and checking continuity on signal and ground wires between the sensor and ATC module.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground cable to protect the ATC module during repair.

  2. Access the Sensor

    Remove the necessary cab interior panels or HVAC access covers to reach the evaporator core housing.

  3. Replace or Repair

    If the sensor failed the resistance test: Pull the old temperature sensor probe out of the evaporator fins and carefully insert the new sensor probe into the exact same location. If the wiring harness failed: Locate the break or the short-to-power in the harness, splice and solder the broken wire, or replace the damaged connector pigtail, and wrap the repair in heat-shrink tubing and electrical tape.

  4. Reassembly

    Plug the sensor connector back into the harness. Reinstall all HVAC covers and cab panels.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition ON, and use the tractor's diagnostic display or a Jaltest/Case IH diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 16115 fault code.

  6. Test Operation

    Run the engine and turn the A/C on maximum cooling. Verify that the compressor clutch engages and that the system does not freeze up or throw the code again.
