Case IH 16133 – Cab Climate Control / Air Conditioning Controller (ATC): Low pressure switch (-) input shorted to ground.

Issue description

The electrical circuit for the Air Conditioning (A/C) Low Pressure Switch has a short to ground on its negative input side. This cuts power to the compressor clutch if the pressure drops below a safe threshold.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Wiring Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the A/C low pressure switch back to the cab controller. Look for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom that could cause the negative wire to short against the tractor's chassis.

  2. Multimeter Continuity Test: Disconnect the electrical connector at the low pressure switch. Use a multimeter to check the negative input wire for continuity to ground.

  3. Switch Isolation Test: If the harness tests fine, check if the internal contacts of the low pressure switch itself have failed and shorted to the switch housing.

  4. Refrigerant Pressure Check: Hook up A/C manifold gauges to verify the system has the correct static and running refrigerant pressure, as a compromised switch or wiring often masks actual low-pressure conditions.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Locate the Switch

    Find the A/C low pressure switch. It is typically threaded directly into the A/C receiver drier or the suction line in the engine bay/cab cowl area.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic tests revealed a short in the harness, splice and heat-shrink the damaged section of the wire, then wrap it in protective loom.

  4. Replace the Switch (If Applicable)

    Disconnect the electrical pigtail from the switch. If no Schrader valve is present, the A/C system must be safely evacuated by a certified technician first. Unthread the faulty switch, lubricate the O-ring on the new switch with a drop of clean PAG oil, and thread the new OEM switch into the fitting.

  5. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical harness to the new switch.

  6. Recharge and Test

    If the system was evacuated, pull a vacuum and recharge the A/C system with the correct weight of R134a refrigerant. Reconnect the battery, clear the 16133 fault code from the cab monitor, and run the A/C to ensure the compressor clutch engages properly.
