Case IH 162 – TMF (Tractor Management Function) or PTO Controller: Engine Stalled when the PTO was running

Indicates that the engine stalled or the engine speed dropped too low for the PTO to remain in the 'ON' state while the Power Take-Off (PTO) clutch was engaged.

   Check for implement overload: Verify if the tractor was pulling a heavy PTO implement (like a baler or mower) that jammed or overloaded the engine, causing a genuine mechanical stall.

   Check for accompanying fault codes: Look for active codes related to the Engine Speed Sensor (e.g., ENG 115, 3020) or the PTO Shaft Speed Sensor (e.g., 3010). If the engine did not actually stall, a speed sensor has likely failed.

   Inspect wiring: Remove the controller cover from the rear of the tractor. Check the wire and connections between the alternator terminal 'W' and the PTO controller pin C056-1 for an open circuit. Also, check pin C057-1 to ensure the power supply to the PTO controller is not shorted to the chassis ground.

   Check fuel system: If the engine genuinely stalled but the implement was not jammed, verify fuel pressure and check for fuel starvation issues under load.

   Clear the Load

   If the stall was caused by excessive load, clear the implement jam, reduce the operating load, and restart the tractor. Clear the fault code from the display.

   Repair Wiring

   If an open circuit or short to ground was found during the diagnostic checks at the PTO controller (pins C056-1 or C057-1), repair the damaged harness wiring and secure the connections.

   Replace Sensors

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a false stall reading due to sensor failure, locate the Engine Speed Sensor or the Dual PTO Speed Sensor. Disconnect the wiring harness, unbolt the faulty sensor, and install the replacement.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Turn the key on, clear the inactive fault codes from the TMF/PTO controller, and test the PTO engagement without a load to ensure the code does not return.
