Case IH 165 – TMF (Tractor Management Frame / Transmission Controller): PTO Shaft rotation is detected when the Engine is OFF.

The control module is receiving a frequency/speed signal from the PTO speed sensor while the engine RPM is at zero. This is typically caused by a failed PTO speed sensor sending a 'phantom' signal, a short circuit in the sensor wiring harness, or moisture/corrosion in the connectors.

   Visual & Physical Check: Ensure the tractor is off. Verify that the PTO shaft is not actually being turned by an attached, high-inertia implement that is still winding down.

   Harness Inspection: Trace the wiring harness from the PTO speed sensor (located at the rear PTO housing) back to the TMF controller. Look for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points that could cause a short to power or ground.

   Connector Check: Disconnect the PTO speed sensor. Inspect the pins for corrosion, water ingress, or damage. Moisture in the connector is a common cause of false frequency signals.

   Sensor Testing: Using a multimeter, check the resistance of the PTO speed sensor against OEM service manual specifications. If the sensor is internally shorted, it must be replaced.

   Clear and Retest: Clear the code via the tractor's diagnostic menu. Turn the key on (engine off). If the code returns immediately without the engine running, the sensor or wiring is definitively at fault.

   Safety First

   Turn off the ignition, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the PTO speed sensor on the rear PTO housing assembly.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Removal

   Remove the retaining bolt holding the sensor in the housing. Carefully pull the sensor straight out. (Have a rag handy, as a small amount of hydraulic/transmission fluid may seep out).

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new PTO speed sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor into the housing until it is fully seated.

   Secure

   Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque spec (do not overtighten, as the sensor body is often plastic).

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place.

   Calibration/Clearing

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key to the ON position, enter the diagnostic menu, and clear the TMF 165 fault code. Start the tractor and engage/disengage the PTO to verify the repair.
